Our Farm History

Rooted in North Denver Since the 1930s

About Spano Greenhouse and Farm

Spano’s Greenhouse and Farm has been a proud part of the North Denver community for generations. Located at 5820 Lowell Blvd, Denver, CO 80221, our family-owned farm has been growing fresh, local produce since the early 1930s – right in the heart of the neighborhood. What started with celery and seasonal vegetables has grown into a beloved destination for flowers, garden plants, homemade baked goods, canned specialties, and community events. Whether you’re visiting the farm stand, picking pumpkins in the fall, or attending one of our farm-to-table dinners, you’re stepping into a tradition deeply rooted in Colorado soil and Denver pride.

Colorado Proud

Today at Spano’s, we believe in selling Colorado grown produce. If we don’t grow it, we look to other Colorado farmers who do.

1920s

In The Beginning

Tony Spano, Anthony and Marie's grandfather, was born in Palermo, Sicily and migrated to the United States in the late 1920's. He worked for a cousin until the mid 30's when he and his father-in-law Jack Calabrese, purchased land on Lowell Blvd.
1940s

Pascal Celery For The Country

Tony and his wife Josephine Calabrese, along with their three children, Dominic, Grace, and Pasqualena began planting vegetables on their newly acquired land. The big crop for the time was Pascal Celery. By 1944, the Spanos, along with the other celery growers in the area, were growing celery for Green Brothers, who shipped celery all across the country.
1960s

Spano's Produce is Born

In the mid 1960's, Tony's son Dominic took over and began building greenhouses in 1967. He and his wife Dorothy and their children Anthony, Donna, and Marie, farmed and grew carnations. In 1972, the family opened up a produce market, selling peppers and eggplants directly to the public. That's how Spano's Produce came to be.
1980s

Keeping the Greenhouse Growing

In the early 80's, the carnation business came to an end and bedding plants took over as the main greenhouse product.
